My son-in-law bought me a compost tumbler, a JK 270 to be exact! He has begun selling these Swedish-designed compost tumblers in the US and asked me to blog about my experience with using the tumbler, in hopes to best understand his customers. In this blog, I’ll be sharing what it was like to set it up when I got the composter, how it works, what I found to be challenging and what things were convenient about it. For the record, I have no previous experience with composting, this is completely new for me. I’m excited!

My son-in-law, Niklas’ hope is that this blog will help others who want to learn more about composting, and also for this to be a place where they can discuss their thoughts and share their experiences.

With that said, let’s get ready to TUMBLE!!

We got dirt

There has been a while since I wrote on this blog but I want to share with you all that I now have Compost soil.

I empty one of the chambers and dumped it into my wheelbarrow. It was more fun then I ever imagine, maybe it was because I have been waiting for this moment a long time, that my plants needed the compost to grow or that sometimes its just fun to play with dirt.


This compost dirt is something I never seen before. It is nothing like regular dirt, the color is way more light and the texture is more compact. I did  find some bones from the turkey on thanksgiving which i thought was kind of funny. I posted a picture to try to explain the difference, the dark color dirt is regular pot soil and the lighter one is compost dirt direct from my Joraform JK 270.


I'm gonna mix the compost dirt with my trees and bushes. Hopefully I can sprinkle some of it on to my lawn since it needs some. This has actually made me want to do more stuff with my garden. I'm now thinking about getting rid of my roses and planting new bushes. I'm waiting for the new chamber to be done, it's gonna go way faster this time since I got the neighbors to dumb their trash into my tumbler, I'm a lucky guy that gets to take care of my neighbors kitchen waste :)

    Thanks for your review, the dirt looks great! After reading your blog and a few other reviews, we purchased the Jora a couple of weeks ago and have started composting. So far, we have some smell issues, but hope to remedy that with wood chips (we were using some saw dust before -- maybe not enough). A friend of mine is also ready to buy one after reading your blog. Thanks again!
